Power and authority (Sumblog 4)

Power and authority can be seen in many ways. Weber Marx was one to explain and express different ways of them. In class our professor gave great examples of how power and authority are used. He explained how he has authority of us students but no power. He has the authority over us because he gives us the final grade and gives us the chance to gain points throughout the year. But on the other hand he has no power over forcing us to do the assignments and the power of making us study.  Another example of this could be how a bully has the authority to make you do something but has absolute no power over you!

Authority can be seen in many different ways to different people. People can see authority as politically, religiously or just simple things like family authority. We see it as politically because the government has many rules of the people. And depending on what you believe in religion can play a huge role in what power it has over you and your family. The way we see family in the authority part is that when you grow up you often get bossed around by your mother and father. Not only your mother and father but you may have gotten told what to do by your older siblings, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Pretty much as I grew up my elders had power over me and had the authority to tell me what to do because I didn’t know any better.

Below I decided to post a picture of a mother and her son. This shows that the mother is clearly the authority figure in this situation. She seems to be yelling at him and pointing her finger toward him. It helped me realize that power and authority can be different even though they seem similar.
